Why are Healers always on about our Chakras? Well, Healers, Yogis, Shaman, and other energetic healers feel and see our energy, to be able to heal blockages, and re-align energy that’s flowing around your body, they need to understand the way that energy flows, how it feels, and where it is coming from around the physical body. It’s really useful to understand your energy centres, It’s a bit like listening to a health professional refer to parts of your body, you like to know where they are and what function they have. In this blog, I will speak about the Seven main Chakras, over the next few blogs, where they are and their function. Hopefully, this will assist anyone who is new to the idea that energy is a real thing within our body, and we should be aware of how healthy it is, as this will directly affect our physical well-being.
If you have ever been to an energy healer or studied Yoga, you may be familiar with the term Chakra. Chakra is a word we use for our energy centres around our body. The energy centres are vortexes that run from the front of our body all the way through to our back. You may have heard of the seven main chakras, and I will refer to these in my blogs. However, it is said there are over 100 Chakra points over our body and within our auric field (The auric field is the energy that expands beyond our physical self). We don’t need to be concerned about all the energy centres in our body, The main seven will take care of the rest for you (your energy healer will also be sure that energy is flowing freely).
The Root or Base Chakra.
Let’s start at the base, yes, our first Chakra is located at the base of the spine, between the coccyx and the pubic bone. This energy colour is a deep red. Its basic function is our survival, it also grounds us on this physical plane.
This Chakra stabilises us, if we cannot stabilise this root energy, we will quickly notice ourselves feeling a little off-key. The root chakra is our energetic foundation for all the other energy centres. It is often related to all the dense parts of the body, mainly the skeletal system – our bones. Think of this energy as the energy that holds our physical self, firmly and safely, our bones being the foundations of our whole self.
The energetic path of the root chakra energy goes down to the ground, through our legs and the soles of our feet, rooting all our energy to Mother Earth (Gaia).

In ancient Sanskrit, the root chakra is known as the MULADHARA, meaning “root support”. You will often see the symbol for the root chakra being depicted as a four-petal lotus flower. Each petal has a meaning: Mind, Intellect, Consciousness and Ego, referring to the four main aspects of self. The foundations that this Chakra provide are strong and ridged for the rest of the main chakras to stack on.
I also should mention that this is where the Kundalini energy lays dormant, ready to be awakened and to rise back up to source. I will write more about the Kundalini in another blog.
How would I know if my Root Chakra is a little off?
I don’t think anyone likes to think that their energy is a little off, but this really isn’t something to panic about, we are humans, having a human experience, in a bonkers world, so we are all bound to be a little off from time to time.
The main thing is awareness, being aware of how we are in this bonkers world, how we respond rather than react, and how we progress or not in our daily lives. Generally, the small things in our lives will give us the biggest clues to how our energetic self is doing.
Here are a few clues to consider if your Root Chakra is out of balance:
- You are trying so hard to progress in something, and no matter how hard you try your progress just doesn’t seem to take off.
- You have many dreams and aspirations, it doesn’t matter how hard you try to focus to bring these things into your reality, they just don’t seem to be part of this lifetime.
- You worry so much if you are faced with changes to your living place or your Job, you lose sleep, can’t focus, or settle, and your anxiety is through the roof!
- You have issues with the smallest of fears, in fact, these small fears aren’t small at all.
- You feel insecure in most of your day-to-day running, the anxiety is so much, that the dark cloud of depression often rears its gloomy head.
- Maintaining a healthy diet, sleeping a restful sleep, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly are problematic.
- You lack wonderment about this beautiful world, in fact, you question the value of life and the point of it all.

Now I have bigged these up to give you a clue as to where the energy, thought process and feeling could be heading if your root chakra is out of balance. The main themes to consider are:
- Safety
- Security
- Stability
- Primal urges
- Identity
Safety will begin with self, do you feel safe within yourself, are you safe where you are living, are you finding safety with the people that surround you (family and loved ones)?
Security is closely following safety, are you secure with your surroundings, in your job or are you provided for securely? Do you have all your basic needs met? Food, clothes, shelter, warmth/ cool, protection from the elements.
Stability, again overlapping the previous points, do you have stability in your life? Where you live, your basic needs, and the people around you?
Primal Urges, do you acknowledge primal urges to be safe, to run, attack, and hide? Are you in tune with the signal your body gives you if it senses danger? Are you aware and in control of primal instincts of procreation?
Are you aware of your own Identity and comfortable in your own skin? Are you aware that parents and their parents have often taught you all they know, unaware of their conditioning?
The list is endless, hopefully, you have a bit of an idea of the themes that come up in this energy.
What can I do about un-balanced Root Chakra Energy?
Ground yourself.
It’s that simple. Get out into nature, take your shoes off and get your bare feet onto the earth.
“This won’t solve all my real issues!” I hear you!!
Humour me and give it a go. Science has even gotten onto this, and it is proven that grounding works.
A grounding Reiki session will open your Root chakra, reiki energy will penetrate this centre and start to align the energy, you will notice a shift start to happen and the small signs that alerted you will start to dissipate. This eases the heaviness that you would have been carrying, empowering you to make your own adjustments, thus opening and aligning this centre even more.
Reiki is a great modality for supporting and holding you energetically. It eases the physical heaviness and creates the best environment for your body to do what it does best, heal itself.
If you are noticing some of the symptoms of an unbalanced Root Chakra, and noticing how it’s impacting your everyday life, book yourself a Reiki session with me, or get in touch to discuss your symptoms. I am happy to discuss your concerns and needs, to get you feeling more aligned and grounded.
